对于马鲁格（奥利弗·李多度OliverLitondo饰）来说，学习是一生中最让他感到幸福的事情，然而，已经84岁高龄的他再也不可能重温曾经课堂上的快乐时光了。肯尼亚推行的免费教育政策让马鲁格看到了新的希望，他希望能够成为众多受益的学生中的一员。马鲁格的执着和热情感动了教师珍（娜奥米·哈里斯NaomieHarris饰）却没能感动校方人员和广大家长，对于这样一个退役军人在一群小孩子的包围下重返课堂，反对的呼声统一而响亮。与此同时，珍也因为自己支持马鲁格的行为而受到了惩罚。看到帮助自己的善良人遭受了不公平的待遇，愤怒的马鲁格决定绝不屈服，他要向刻板的政府提出挑战。
